Prince, Prince… PRINCE… What can I say? You were in Paris FOR the fashion week. You were at the Chanel défilé at Le Grand Palais, you fall in love with the place and were jalous of Karl so you said what nobody if not Prince could say “I want to do a show here as well“. And so you did, because you are Prince. Thursday 8th the news was official, “Prince will give two shows at Le Grand Palais on Sunday 11th, the tikets will be on sell on Friday 9th at 10 am”. Prince on monday in a press conference said “I am more happy than ever actually” and he prove it this week.
Let me give you a quick review of my amazing week, from Friday 9th to Tuesday 12th.

José James blessed the New Morning (Paris) Tuesday September 29th. He was with a great band composed of Michael Campagna (tenor, soprano and flute), Jef Neve (piano), Neville Malcolm (bass) and Richard Spaven (drums). It’s hard to give a quick review because it was a 2 hours show with a lot of beautiful moments. José James is, we knew it, a big fan of the Coltrane, Alice and John and I think it’s one of the best thing he could do to celebrate their music and spirituality. JJ began with a “Om” that surprised most of us, at this time I was afraid that the show would be too experimental for me but it wasn’t the case at all. It was the perfect show to introduce jazz to newcomer, a mix between vocal jazz and instrumental jazz. Yes, José james gave a lot of space to the amazing band- I recorded a beautiful solo by Neville Malcolm that I will post soon. I saw him on stage several time and I believe it was the time he and the band took the most pleasure on stage. The spirit, music and beauty of the Coltrane were remarkable celebrate this night.

Jesse Boykins III is a singer I am still discovering – his voice, his music, his spirituality. I totally slept on his music when a friend of mine told me to listen to him because he was « the new (and nowadays the only one) neo soul singer » – dixit Jamal. As for me neo soul is Bilal and D’angelo, nobody can really do better than them but we have to leave a chance to the new generation, mine, the youngest. I listenned and weren’t that much impress at first. Then I saw a video live of Amorous and I totally felt in love with the music. The song is beautiful, Jesse Boykins III is really great on stage. He looks like he did that forever; He is natural, funny, plays with the audience (the feminine part of the audience, lol), is in harmony with his band. It’s really pleasant to see artists like this on stage, just having a great time and so giving a great time to the public. This is why I contacted him to ask him a few questions about his music, his influences, his move to NYC, his friendship with Bilal and the future. Yes, Jesse Boykins III is working on a new album called « Love Apparatus ».
You were born in Chicago but grew up in Jamaica. How long did you stay there and what was the music you were listening to ?
I was in Jamaica for about 8 years… most of my childhood. I grew up listening and being around mostly gospel, church hymns but my uncles always jammed reggae in the car and when the family get togethers.
Why did you move to Miami and what did you do, musicaly speaking ?
At the time my mother was in miami, while I was in Jamaica. I just wanted to be with my mom, hence the move. I owe a lot of my sound and influence to my move because that is where I met my mentor Ms Shenita Hunt. She was my middle and high school choir director. She basically open my ears as far as what and how I listened to music.
How was it to come to NY to the New School University ?
The New York move happen so fast. I remember getting a phone call on tuesday requesting me to make the orientation and being on a flight the next day, with one suitcase some socks and underwear, a pair of jeans, 3 t shirts and a sweater. I forgot to pack a towel… HA! I was glad to be in a new surrounding though. I was on edge for my 1st week in NY.

I remember Afta-1 sent me his album back in 2007 and I am glad to see today the evolution of his work as of his popularity. It’s always a great thing to see how people and artists can grow up and looking at them becoming who they are supposed to become. Here we go, I’ve decided to put together English and French instead of making two separetes blogs. I’ve tried but it was too hard and too much work for nothing. So now you will be able to read the entries in french and english (my english isn’t perfect!).
I hope you will enjoy the change and effort.

Voilà, j’ai décidé de mettre ensemble anglais et français au lieu de faire deux blogs séparés. J’ai essayé mais cela me demandé trop de travail pour finalement pas grand chose.

L’été pour ma part s’annonce triste et maussade. En deuil, je suis en famille pour la semaine, on pleure un proche perdu lors d’un accident. Elle partait en vacance en famille, ses vacances elle et les siens ne les connaitront jamais et ne les vivront jamais plus. On pleure, on se dit “et si ce con n’avait pas créé cet accident“, “et si ils étaient parti un jour plus tard” et si et si. Mais rien n’y changera et les pleures écoulés n’arrangeront rien. Elle n’est plus, son sourire reste dans nos mémoires, son rire et sa bonne humeur, son humour génial et son regard taquin. On la gardera près de nous dans nos cœur à défaut de plus. Alors encore une fois je sèche mes larmes avec la musique. Je compte donc sur l’été et ses festival pour m’aider et je conseille cette cure à chacun.
J’ai eu l’habitude d’aller au Jazz Fest de Nice, mon budget ne me l’a malheureusement pas permit cette année, alors je me contenterai des festivals parisiens qui s’annoncent plutôt prometteur. A commencer par Gil Scott Heron, qui est déjà complet, je souhaite donc un bon concert aux chanceux et je me re regarde les vidéos prisent l’année dernière de mon premier concert à NYC. Et puis il y en aura d’autres – des bon concerts – George Clinton le 3 Août qui clôtura le Black Summer Festival. En août se sera soirées et balades nocturne avec l’Itouch. Le retours en musique live se fera avec le Jazz à la villette en Septembre : Seun Kuti, Ornette Coleman, Ron Carter, De La Soul, Ahmad Jamal… Et Free Your Funk promet de belles dates à la rentrer. Sans oublier le Rock The Bells Fr.
La cerise sur le gâteau pour cette semaine, Prince sera peut-être en concert les 24, 25 et 26 Juillet à l’Olympia. On y croit.

Gil Scott Heron à NYC 2008
Depuis Avril je travaillais avec Emmanuel et Denis pour Free Your Funk, une association dans l’événementiel musical. Grâce a eux j’ai pu travailler sur la promotion de concerts et soirées tel que Madlib, Spinna, Jazzy Jeff etc. Grâce a eux j’ai eu quelques conversations intéressantes avec Spinna, Bobbito Garcia ou encore Rich Medina, deux artistes que j’ai revu à New York en Juin, deux artistes très amicaux et ouverts, qui n’hésitent pas à vous faire découvrir et vous accueillir. J’ai assisté a de très bonnes soirées. La dernière de la saison et celle qui marque la fin de ce stage fut 9th Wonder. Je me suis occupée de la première partie avec Emmanuel, la réalisation du line-up spécial french beatmaker fut un réel plaisir. Un stage qui m’a apporté beaucoup avec deux personnes de qualités et passionnés de musique.
Hâte de retrouver à la rentrée leurs prochains concerts et soirées (du lourd arrive!) en tant que spectatrice cette fois ci.
Il y a des temps dans une vie où tout est noir, rien ne va vraiment. La mort d’un artiste qu’on appréciait dont le souvenir qu’on a de lui revient toujours comme par la simple lecture du dernier Vibration magazine, la perte d’un talent, la maladie d’un proche, des souvenirs qui ne seront jamais plus d’actualités, et pour couronner le tout la pluie s’ajoute à tout ça. C’est dans ces moments là où on se rend parfois compte de l’importance de nos passions, ce qui nous fait et fera toujours vibrer. Cette passion quelle qu’elle soit pour chacun d’entre nous, nous aide à “keep our head up“. La passion dans mon cas est l’Art et à travers ce blog je vous la livre, ma passion. Je la partage avec vous et je tiens le bout grâce à vous et à ce partage. Mettre sur vimeo ou youtube le dernier concert de José James, des vidéos de la journée que j’ai passé avec Bobbito Garcia et Rich Medina (qui sont d’ailleurs des crèmes), uploader le dernier Prince, parler d’un artiste que je viens de découvrir, mettre des photos de la dernière exposition vue… Tout ça m’aide au quotidien. Ainsi que travailler pour Free Your Funk et aider à promouvoir ces soirées, comme la prochaine – Madlib et JRocc (le 23 mai à la Bellevilloise). Tout ça, ce partage, ce travail autour de la musique, ces rencontres, nourrit mon quotidien de bonne énergie et permet tant bien que mal d’oublier les événements négatif de la vie.
